Steve McQueen's Famous Persol Sunglasses Are Back

Italian eyewear brand Persol is keeping the legend of Steve McQueen alive with the permanent release of his iconic shades. Previously unknown to those outside of Italy, the brand blew up internationally after McQueen wore a pair in the 1968 classic heist movie The Thomas Crown Affair. The 714 sunglass soon become a must-have fashion accessory, with McQueen going on to wear variations of the sunglasses in Bullitt and The Getaway as well as his personal life.

While Persol has continued to release limited editions of the 714 over the years, the luxury eyewear specialists are now making the 714 a permanent part of its modern collection. Defined by its aviator-style design and ability to fold into a pocket-sized shape, the 714 sunglasses are available in five colorways. Each pair is crafted using original acetates, steel hinges, and crystal lenses.

Traditionalists can grab a pair of light Havana tortoiseshell frames with icy blue lenses as featured in The Thomas Crown Affair, while otherwise might be drawn to the honey yellow variation inspired by McQueen’s personal Boeing Stearman.

The other three frame and lens color combinations are light Havana with light blue lens, Havana with green lens, and black with smoke gray lens.

Persol is also releasing a Steve McQueen Special Edition version of the sunglasses with platinum-plated lenses and light Havana frames. These sunnies come with a color-matched box with sparse white text reading, “There’s timeless. And there’s 714 Steve McQueen.” There will only be a limited number of these sunglasses released.

The Steve McQueen 714 sunglasses are available now via Persoal for between $480 – $790.
