Zack Snyder's 'Army of the Dead' Is a Zombie-Heist Movie
Zack Snyder returns to the zombie genre with Netflix’s Army of the Dead. After first finding fame with a remake of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, Snyder has established himself as one of Hollywood’s more creative filmmakers. Although he’s had more misses than hits, Army of the Dead is shaping as a big-budget action blockbuster sure to please fans.
The movie takes place in Las Vegas after a zombie apocalypse. The official synopsis reads; “Following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.”
After reading that, do you really need any more convincing this is going to be the movie of the year? Bautista killing zombies is like my wet dream. While the trailer doesn’t give much away, setting a zombie film in Las Vegas is a fantastic idea. Sure, it’s been done before (Resident Evil: Extinction), but this film looks like it’s actually using the setting to its advantage.
This is Synder’s first original story since Sucker Punch, and we all know how that turned out, so there’s bound to be some skepticism about this flick. But Netflix doesn’t seem to be fazed, as they are setting Army of the Dead up as a franchise. Along with Synder’s movie, they are producing Army of the Dead: The Prequel, starring Matthias Schweighöfer (who’ll also appear in Snyder’s film). There are also plans for an animated TV series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, featuring characters from the film. Fingers crossed Army of the Dead turns out ok.
Army of the Dead will premiere on Netflix May 21.
