17. St. Philomena’s Church:
St. Philomena’s built in AD 1840 belongs to the Roman Catholic denomination and was earlier known as Joseph Caver. The church has twin towers which are 175 feet tall. The church resembles the St. Patrick’s Cathedral which is built in the Gothic Style or architecture. Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV laid the foundation in 1933 and was designed by a French Architect. The cellar has a statue of St. Philomena, and a piece of her bone has been preserved in this church.
The Cathedral is considered to be the second largest Cathedral in Asia and among the largest churches in India, has been modelled under the Neo-gothic style of architecture, by the Frenchman Dally. The Cathedral has a crypt in which the statue of St. Philomena is located. The twin spires of the church are made to resemble the spires of the Cologne Cathedral.
