Quentin Tarantino Tried To Bring Back Leather Ties. It Didn’t Go Well

Disclaimer: Quentin Tarantino is a great man. Without the juggernaut director, we’d have had no Thurman-Travolta twist jives, no biblical Samuel L. Jackson monologues and certainly no French translations of the Big Mac – and that was just Pulp Fiction. During a recent appearance at the Sundance Film Festival however, the director’s wardrobe didn’t quite match the onscreen prestige. If you want to look like you’ve set up an at-home tannery, this is it. The 54-year-old took the tonal and texture tip-off to the extreme, matching a leather tie last seen in a 2006 copy of NME with an ill-fitting leather jacket. You can’t fault the intention – pieces that chime throughout a look are a strong move, but only if said colours are wearable. Babyshit brown has long been a tricky shade to pull off, so factor in the added shininess and you’re left with two fouls beyond salvation. That said, let’s be realistic. Tarantino is a film director that clearly shows little interest in clothing outside yellow Bruce Lee tracksuits. But if you want to know the wrong way to do texture, here’s your cue.
