The work of one of Belgium’s most famous painters is being immortalized in a series of modern collaborations.
American clothing brand Opening Ceremony recently unveiled the project, produced in association with the Artists’ Rights Society.
The limited edition line incorporates the legacy of late surrealist painter René Magritte into clothing and footwear. Opening Ceremony’s undertaking marks the 50-year anniversary of the iconic artist’s death.
The line-up features crew neck jumpers, collarless shirts with matching slim fit trousers, and oversized tops, as well as a bomber jacket and funnel coat.
In full, the range takes twelve of Magritte’s paintings and translates them onto wearable pieces. Among the paintings used as graphics are The King’s Museum, Good Connections, La Cascade, The Lovers and Sheherazade.
According to the clothing firm, the collection, “Continues the poetic and humorous nature of the artist’s original work, and continues a theme that Magritte was most interested in.”
In tandem with the clothing, Magritte’s work also appears on two footwear silhouettes for men – in conjunction with Birkenstock and Vans – with a third for women from Manolo Blahnik.
Vans’ offering puts five recognizable pieces from the painter, who was voted the ninth greatest Belgian of all time in 2005, on its canvas upper. Similarly, Birkenstock has printed reproductions of the images on three classic sandal styles.
The limited edition collections will be available in Opening Ceremony stores from May. Pre-orders are also being taken online, with prices for clothing start at $315 (£190), Vans Authentic shoes at $135 (£82) per pair and Birkenstock’s at $170 (£102).
