Westerns have been on a steady incline lately. After decades without a huge presence from the genre, in recent years film and television such as Hell or High Water, Longmire, and the audience acclaimed Yellowstone have redefined the genre for a more modern context. With this in mind, Netflix has decided to make a “new school western” set for release this summer. 

The Harder They Fall, directed and co-written by Jeymes Samuel (whose previous film work includes the short film JAY-Z: Legacy), is set in the 1800s and focuses on the historical Rufus Buck Gang – which was half African American and half Creek Indian – as they are pursued by Nat Love (played by Jonathan Majors, who previously had a supporting role in the western Hostiles), who is hell-bent on finding the man who murdered his parents.

When outlaw Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) discovers that his enemy Rufus Buck (Idris Elba) is being released from prison he rounds up his gang to track Rufus down and seek revenge. Those riding with him in this assured, righteously new school Western include his former love Stagecoach Mary (Zazie Beetz), his right and left-hand men – hot-tempered Bill Pickett (Edi Gathegi) and fast drawing Jim Beckwourth (R.J. Cyler)—and a surprising adversary-turned-ally.
