'National Treasure' TV Series Coming to Disney+
After years of fans hoping for a third installment in the beloved National Treasure franchise, Disney+ has officially ordered a 10 episode National Treasure series.
According to Deadline, the series will feature new character Jess Morales, a twenty-year-old dreamer who, with her diverse group of friends, sets off on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover her mysterious family history and recover lost treasure. The series will also see the return of National Treasure producer Jerry Bruckheimer and original series writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, with franchise newcomer Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding) set to direct.
The National Treasure series traditionally follows historian and amateur cryptologist Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicholas Cage) as he hunts for a lost American treasure hidden by the Freemasons during the American Revolutionary War. The map, coded on the United States Declaration of Independence, is eventually stolen by Gates and his team to keep out of the hands of dastardly treasure hunter Ian Howe (Sean Bean). In the sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Gates and his team search for a Native American city of gold, using codes from the President’s “Secret Book.” Both films were directed by Jon Turtletaub and also star Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger, Jon Voight, and Harvey Keitel.
Although Jess Morales seems to be swiping Benjamin Franklin Gates’ leading role, Nicholas Cage fans hopefully have nothing to worry about as a third National Treasure feature film continuing Jon Turtletaub’s hit franchise is still in development (and has been since 2008), with writer Chris Bremner (Bad Boys For Life) signing onto the project back in January 2020.
Disney+ has been the home of various breakout streaming series including The Mandalorian, WandaVision, The Right Stuff, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with more on the way.
