'The Lord of the Rings' Actors Launch New Podcast
Fans of Middle-Earth don’t have to wait for Amazon’s upcoming The Lord of the Rings prequel television series (set long before The Hobbit) to premiere sometime later this year to return to familiar spots such as The Shire, Rivendell, Rohan, or Gondor. As it turns out, The Lord of the Rings stars Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd are launching a podcast all about their time filming Peter Jackson’s high fantasy epic.
Monaghan and Boyd portrayed hobbits (and Frodo’s cousins) Merry and Pippin respectively in all three films of the Academy Award-winning trilogy. Boyd even returned to Middle-Earth during Jackson’s prequel trilogy, The Hobbit, and in the end credits of the final film, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, where he sang a heartfelt goodbye to Tolkien’s world entitled The Last Goodbye.
Well, apparently it wasn’t Boyd’s final goodbye to The Lord of the Rings series as he and Monaghan intend on reminiscing about their time in New Zealand… err, Middle-Earth, at the turn of the century. Their podcast, entitled The Friendship Onion, is reportedly “coming very soon.”
The teaser trailer has been released online and can be viewed below:
The official description of the upcoming podcast reads;
Join your favorite Hobbits, friends, and co-stars, Billy Boyd and Dom Monaghan as they take a look back at their time on ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ Featuring interviews with cast and crew, diving deep into life behind the scenes, and answering the many fan questions, ‘The Friendship Onion’ will peel back the layers of their friendship, both on-screen and off.
While it’s unsure what secrets Monaghan and Boyd will disclose on their show, the pair recently did a Reddit AMA (“Ask Me Anything”), taking fan questions from all around the world, to promote their upcoming show.
The Friendship Onion will be available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Its premiere episode will be on May 18th.
