James Gunn's 'The Suicide Squad' Looks Like a Wild, Bloody Ride
After dropping the poster yesterday, the first trailer for The Suicide Squad is finally here, and it’s a dozy. Not only does it feature the return of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), but we’re introduced to a whole new cast of colorful characters, including a talking shark (Sylvester Stallone).
Part sequel, part reboot, The Suicide Squad is directed by James Gunn and certainly has a Guardians of the Galaxy feel to it. The plot details are scarce, but from what we’ve gathered the group of anti-heroes are put together as Task Force X and sent to “the South American island of Corto Maltese to destroy Jotunheim, a Nazi-era prison and laboratory which held political prisoners and conducted experiments.”
The trailer is a mix of comedy and extreme violence, with the group first tasked with saving a kidnapped Harley Quinn, who it turns out has already escaped. From there the squad gains some new members before being sent on another mission where we see the misfits in action, with Stallone’s King Shark eating a man and tearing another apart.
The R-rated DC superhero movie looks like a lot of fun and introduces a raft of new characters, including the ruthless killer Peacemaker (John Cena), mercenary Bloodsport (Idris Elba), and Sol Soria (Alice Braga).
Let’s be honest, it can’t be worse than the original, right?
The Suicide Squad debuts in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously on August 6, 2021
