Celebrities collaborating with high-end fashion houses to release capsule collections is par for the course in this day and age, but rarely does the announcement of such a collaboration come almost three decades after the death of the celebrity involved.
Legendary Japanese fashion label Comme des Garçons released their hotly anticipated Andy Warhol collection this month, in association with the Andy Warhol Foundation – who have permitted Comme des Garçons to create a series of Warhol-inspired pieces.
The simple announcement for the project reads, in part: “We will launch special items of Andy Warhol x Comme des Garçons from May 17? – with the text decorated by Warhol’s signature and portrait.
Andy Warhol was an American artist and personality known for his heavy involvement in the legitimisation of the pop art movement and for coining the witticism “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes”. It’s a comment that now seems eerily prescient considering the current celebrity-driven world in which we live in.
Warhol’s bold, pop culture baiting aesthetic is a match made in heaven for Comme des Garçons’ flair for innovative and eye-catching streetwear. Although details on the pieces are scarce at the time of writing, the items are sure to be like nothing else on the market today.
EDITOR UPDATE: Since the writing of this article, images of the collection have been made available (see below). On offer are a backpack, two pairs of canvas trainers and three t-shirts.
The Andy Warhol x Comme des Garçons collection is available to purchase now at Comme des Garçons worldwide.
