MONOKEL Eyewear

MONOKEL Eyewear SS13

Swedish label MONKEL have released a debut collection of hand crafted eyewear for SS13. Living up to the Scandinavian reputation for high quality and conceptual design, the brand pride themselves on using traditional methods of production to ensure endurance and durability in their frames.

The two founders of the label are professional snowboarders and film makers – not a traditional background for would-be designers but nevertheless, the label has already garnered a huge cult following in the skate, snowboard and BMX community.

The designs in the collection take inspiration from the 1960s and 1970s, particularly the associated music, youth culture and urban sports scene of the time. This, coupled with the founders’ own aesthetic vision, has resulted in an exquisite collection of eyewear, full of timeless and classic silhouettes.

There are currently three key styles to choose from:

The BARSTOW

FashionBeans’ favourite, they are an on trend circular silhouette, which come in five acetate coloured frames. They have a slight hippy/John Lennon vibe to them but with a contemporary spin.

Available colours include: tortoiseshell, grey smoke, clear, black and matte black.

The RADIATOR

These frames have a more fashion forward feel to them, with their angular shape helping to create an extremely strong aesthetc.

They are available in tortoiseshell, matte green and matte black.

The ROBOTNIK

Last but not least, The ROBOTNIK frames are the perfect compromise if you can’t decide between the square RADIATOR or circular BARSTOW. The design is reminiscent of the classic Wayfarer silhouette but with an updated feel.

These are available in faded grey, tortoiseshell and matte black.

Final Word

In addition to their mainline collection, MONOKEL have released a special limited edition design that was produced in collaboration with the highly acclaimed ‘Random Bastards’ collective – famed worldwide for their skate and snowboard film productions. The completely clear acetate frames are similar to the ROBOTNIK silhouette.
