Watch a Bugatti Chiron Sport Race a Fighter Jet

Bugatti has put a special edition Chiron Sport to the ultimate test in a race against a French fighter jet. The “Les Légendes du Ciel” – “Legends of the Sky” –  took on the French Navy’s Dassault Ragael Marine fighter jet in a battle for supremacy down the runway of the Landivisiau Naval Air Base in northwest France.

The one-of-20 supercar was first announced last November and is inspired by Bugatti’s aviation history. Surprisingly, despite the fighter jet being able to produce more than 5,648 horsepower and reach speeds in excess of 300 mph, the Bugatti keeps up for a short period of time.

Equipped with a W16 engine capable of 1,500 horsepower, the Chiron Sport reaches 62 mph in just 2.4 seconds, which is an impressive effort. 13.1 seconds after the race starts, the Bugatti is already reaching speeds of 186 mph. While it blitzes the French Marine at the beginning, the fighter jet soon catches up.

After a slow start, the Rafale takes off 450 meters into the race at a speed of 161 mph. It’s easily faster than the Bugatti, but for a brief moment, before it ascends into the heavens, the two vehicles are neck and neck. For this reason, Bugatti declared the race a draw. Fancy that?

“I pulled away from the Rafale over the first few hundred meters, but after a few hundred meters more it was around 20 meters above and alongside me in the air. An incredible and fantastic sight,” said Pierre-Henri Raphanel, Bugatti’s test driver and pilot for this exercise.

While this race is nothing more than a commercial for Bugatti, it sure makes for spectacular viewing. And if I had a few million lying around, I’m sure I’d buy one.
