Considering it has been a Santa Monica staple since 1959, this nautical-themed bar is one that you definitely won’t want to miss while in this sunny beach-side city. Whether you’re hoping to have a solid seafood dinner or buttery steak before posting up at the bar for a stiff drink, or you’re setting out for a night on the town with some dancing, Chez Jay really does have it all.

Though the space is a bit old school and grungy with peanut shells scattered across the floor and a traditional jukebox in the corner, Chez Jay has a real charm to it that you won’t find anywhere else. There is no denying that this local bar is not as trendy or modern as many of its competitors, but that is what makes it unique and worth visiting.

The Craftsman coins itself as a neighborhood gastropub that serves perfected bar food as well as simple mixed drinks and craft beers. The atmosphere at The Craftsman is very rock & roll without being too grungy, and while it is laid back and cool, it doesn’t really feel like a dive bar. The setting is very rustic-chic, and there is definitely a masculine edge to it. Most nights feature either live music or a DJ set, and you are free to roam and dance or simply sit on one of their large, comfy couches as you watch the performers play. When it comes to ordering food, you absolutely must try their iconic tater tots and fried pickles.

7. The Chestnut Club

Located in the mid-city area of Santa Monica lies the sultry yet lowkey Chestnut Club. The dramatic wood-beamed ceilings and rustic vibe make you feel as though you are in the hippest of bars. In fact, the scene at The Chestnut Club is perhaps more reminiscent of a New York bar rather than an LA one, giving you the chance to find a change of scenery in this incessantly sunny town. The unassuming brick building gives off major speakeasy vibes, contributing to the overall experience at The Chestnut Club. Though they have beer and wine, they are known for their craft cocktails. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, try their Dr. Wong cocktail which features the green fairy, absinthe.
