The 1993 'Super Mario Bros.' Movie Has Been Restored, and With More King Koopa!

Who would’ve thought the critically panned Super Mario Bros. film from the early 1990s would get a digital restoration? Well, thanks to The Movie Archive, it has!

Super Mario Bros., also known as Super Mario Bros.: The Movie, has become a cult classic among fans of the popular video game. With Who Framed Roger Rabbit? star Bob Hoskins in the lead role as Mario and John Leguizamo (Ice Age) portraying his younger brother Luigi, the duo bring the plumber brothers to life in this theatrical bomb. Film legend Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider) also stars as a discounted version of the beloved Nintendo villain Bowser (called President Koopa in the film).

The plot centers around two New York plumbers (Mario Mario and Luigi Mario) as they, along with Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis of The Strain fame), are transported to a dystopian dimension ruled ruthlessly by President Koopa, along with his army of Goombas. While the film is not at all a great representation of the source material, there are some fun quirks that make it (at the very least) an entertaining ride.

With the restoration, The Movie Archive has worked hard to enhance the image quality of the original film (via VHS tape), while also splicing in 20 minutes of never-before-seen deleted scenes, expanding the runtime of the film from 104 minutes to 125. Check out the side-by-side comparison of the traditional vs restored scenes below:

Whether you’re a fan of the original film, the video game, or just love to watch objectively bad movies, the restoration of Super Mario Bros. is definitely worth the watch, and will probably entertain you for a few hours.
