A super-rare Ferrari F60 America could be sold for as much as $4.5 million at an upcoming auction hosted by RM Sotheby’s.

Ferrari’s current celebrity status comes with a bit of a backstory. Luigi Chinetti famously brought Ferrari to the United States in the spring of 1954. It’s no surprise he had the need for speed as he’s remembered as a three-time victor at Le Mans. 

Ever since Chinetti made Ferrari “a thing,” car collectors all over the U.S. have dreamed of one day calling themselves Ferrari owners, swooning at the thought of driving a vehicle known for its power and suave Italian design.

Years later, in 2014, Ferrari set out to celebrate Chinetti’s decision with a grand anniversary affair on Rodeo Driver. As part of the festivities, the Ferrari F60 America was introduced. Only 10 vehicles were manufactured in this design, and now one is headed toward the auction block.

Modeled after the F12berlinetta, the F60 America isn’t just a specialty run. It was built to speak to Ferrari’s growing presence in 1954 when Chinetti himself became a sort of brand ambassador in the U.S. market. Part of his work was to install a racing team in North America.

The team took on the name of NART, short for the North American Racing Team. Success was found quickly, compelling Chinetti to charter a small run of U.S.-spec 275 GTB/4s. The request was answered by a shipment of ten 25 GTB/4 Nart Spiders.

The 2014 F60 America was designed in honor of the order. The Ferrari F12berlinetta, on the other hand, came to life in 2012 at the Geneva Motor Show, designed to take the place of the 599 grand tourer. It was a hit, winning 2013 awards like International Engine of the Year and Best Engine above 4.0 liters. Top Gear even named it the Supercare of the Year 2012! Ferrari rolled out on this high until 2017 when they released a successor.
