Orlando Bloom’s Bare Minimum Suit (And Why You Should Own One)

Despite the Hollywood credentials and million dollar smile, Orlando Bloom isn’t quite the man’s man of the A-list. He exposes himself on paddleboards. He plays wet-fish sailors in series about pirates (and equally wet elves in Tolkien adaptations). He dyed his hair blonde, with mixed results – all of which make for a rather polarising Tinseltown mainstay. Less divisive, however, is his wardrobe. Or at least that of recent days. At a Beijing press conference for his new flick S.M.A.R.T Chase: The Dragon and Phoenix (yeah, not a clue), the 40-year-old dropped what we like to call ‘the bare minimum suit’. And he did it with aplomb. The bare minimum suit is the art of dressed down tailoring – nothing new in menswear. However, by breaking the two-piece down to its core DNA, Bloom cuts a classic figure without the need for excessive accessories: no collar pins, no belt, no tie and, by extension, no tie clip. A simple pocket square is the only detail to hit the smart side of smart-casual, while a granddad collar shirt trims yet more fat from a formal look. Sure, the bare minimum won’t do for a wedding, or even a job interview at most firms. But the next semi-formal event may well be your signal to Bloom.
