If you’ve heard of Gilt Groupe, Henri Bendel, Nanette Lepore, or Shopbop, then you’ve probably come into contact with a Bollare campaign. Chances are, the fashion and beauty PR firm has helped some of your favorite brands make it big.
This week, Accessories Director Tera Leuthauser shares what it’s like to split her time between New York and LA, how nannying through college helped her career, and why being nice pays off.
The Interview:
College Fashion: Did you go to college? If so, what did you study? What was your college experience like?
Tera Leuthauser: Yes, I went to University of California, Irvine. I had the time of my life and wish I could go back! I studied Psychology and Social Behavior, as well as Sociology, and although I ultimately didn’t end up pursuing a job directly in this field, I definitely believe that I took away key learnings that have helped me in my life and career time and time again.
CF: What was your sense of style like in college? How would you say it’s changed?
TL: As most of my girlfriends and I lived in Newport Beach for the majority of our time in college, I think that the beach aesthetic and lifestyle played into our wardrobe choices for sure. A lot of swimsuits and flip flops When we dressed up to go out, it was mostly jeans and pumps, and occasionally a themed costume. Oh, the pictures my sorority sisters could share!
I think my true style personality came out when I moved to New York directly after college, and I was able to experiment a bit more with my look. As my career progressed in fashion, I became more willing to explore trends and build a wardrobe that was inherently “me.”
CF: Did you have any internships or jobs in college? What were they like?
TL: I was a nanny throughout my four years, and loved being a role model to the young kids I spent every day with. Additionally, I interned at several magazines in the Orange County area, and tried to soak up as much information and advice as possible. Although I was incredibly busy with work and school, I knew the importance of the internship experience, and valued the time I spent learning about the industry.
