Bakersfield is a large city located in the Central Valley region of California. The total area it covers is just a touch under 150 square miles with a population of about 350,000. Bakersfield was first a marshland that was lived on by Native Americans. Around 1850, when the gold rush was in full swing, settlers began to occupy the area. Soon after, oil was discovered in this region which brought even more people. The small town of just a insignificant group of discoverers, soon became a large city and the majority of buildings became a downtown which still the center of the city today.
1862 brought destructive floods from the Kern River which destroyed the first settlement. One of the many settlers who came to the region was Tom Baker. Baker was a lawyer and moved to this area around 1863. His property, which was known as Baker’s field, was known as a place to stay for people frequenting the region. Shortly after the 1860’s, the population grew to almost 700 residents. By 1873, Bakersfield became an official city. The city began to grow over the following years and 1900 had over 5,000 residents. Bakersfield continued to grow over the years and by the 2000s was possibly the quickest growing city in the nation, especially in California. Bakersfield covers nearly 115 square miles.
The county that Bakersfield is located in, Kern County, suffered a major disaster in 1952 which
Devastated the community by destroying roads and builds all along the region. This disaster was a 7.5 magnitude earthquake that shook mountains and crumbled fields. Somehow, in all this terror, Bakersfield was mercifully saved and nearly avoided all collateral damage. Sadly, after the near miss of this massive earthquake, Bakersfield experienced an aftershock which hit the center of the city. This took the life of a handful of people and also collapsed many of the original structures in town.
