Album Inspiration: Imagine Dragons’ “Smoke + Mirrors”

Imagine Dragons – Smoke + Mirrors (Official Album Trailer)

Imagine Dragons broke onto the music scene with their debut studio album “Night Visions” in 2012 and released their sophomore follow-up, “Smoke + Mirrors,” last month. The rock band definitely proves their diversity in this album, with a new, eclectic sound that differs in each track, but with a style that is distinctly theirs alone.

Not only are the songs just as catchy and inspiring as they were three years ago, but the lithograph prints that were designed by Tim Cantor for the “art box deluxe” version of the album are creative and visually appealing.

For today’s post, we’re taking inspiration from three of these art prints and the tunes that go with them. Scroll down to see all three looks:

The Unknown

“The Unknown” covers the topic of uncertainty about the future, and is also about Dan Reynolds’ (the lead singer of Imagine Dragons) late grandfather. “He was one of the most humble, funny, and hardworking men I’ve ever known,” Reynolds said.

Dress, Bag, Sandals, Necklace

The art for this track is basically a photo negative of the album cover, and it’s lighter and more reminiscent of the spring season we’re starting to enter. For a similar vibe, start with a light and whimsical maxi dress with loose sleeves and a pretty tulip hem. Add your favorite sandals, a pop of yellow with a practical crossbody bag, and a bird embellished necklace to fit the theme.

No, “Shots” is not a party song about downing alcohol (although I’ll admit, that’s what first came to my mind when I read the title, too). Despite the peppy beat and lightheartedness in Dan’s voice, it is a lyrically dark track about a life filled with regret and personal adversity. However, by the end, he overcomes his self-loathing and trades it in for freedom.
