Netflix’s domination of the small screen continues with the announcement of action blockbuster Outside The Wire. The streaming service’s latest self-funded spectacular stars Anthony Mackie as a super strength android. 

Set in the near future, the film from director Mikael Håfström (Escape Plan, The Rite) focuses on a drone pilot (Damson Idris) who’s sent into a deadly militarized zone. Here he’s paired with Harp (Mackie) and tasked with tracking down a doomsday device before it falls into the hands of insurgents.

While it sounds like your run of the mill action flick, the film is produced by the studio behind Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction and Charlize Theron’s Old Guard, so I’ve high hopes this could be better than your average B-grade actioner.

Plus, if the trailer is anything to go by then most fans of the genre will be satisfied. Soundtracked by Meek Mill’s “Wins & Losses,” it reveals some fantastic set pieces and enough fight scenes to keep any martial arts fan happy. 

Ben Pugh, Erica Steinberg, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Mackie and Jason Spire will all be co-producers, while Emily Beecham (Daphne, Hail, Ceaser!), Michael Kelly (House Of Cards, Dawn Of The Dead), and Pilou Asbæk (Game Of Thrones) join Mackie and Idris in the main cast.

Outside the Wire is scheduled for to hit Netflix January 15, 2021.
