Born in California, Miguel (full name Miguel Jontel Pimentel) is an accomplished musician, record producer, and singer.
Growing up in the San Pedro area of Los Angeles, Miguel knew he wanted a music career at the young age of 13.
With his mixed ethnic background, he was exposed to various musical styles throughout his life. His mother is African-American. His father is Mexican-American.
He’s said that his mother introduced him to early R&B while his father listened to funk, jazz, hip hop and rock.
Influenced by their eclectic tastes, Miguel’s own brand of pop music incorporates all of those genres plus electronica. His breakthrough album, Kaleidescope Dream, came out in 2012. It was a critical darling and commercial success.
The album features his most popular hit to date, “Adorn”. It peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Hot R&B/ Hip Hop chart. He was awarded a Grammy for the song at the 2013 award ceremony.
In 2017, Miguel released his fourth studio album, War & Leisure. On January 24, 2019 the album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
His musical style has been compared to greats like Prince, David Bowie and Freddie Mercury.
