How To Wash Baby Hair?

In case of newborns, the best way to go is by using a sponge. Supporting the head and shoulders and tilting it slightly, dab the sponge gently on the hair until it is clean. After about four to five weeks, you will have to integrate shampoo into the baby’s hair washing routine.

Pick out a shampoo meant for babies and then wet the hair with a sponge and add a few drops of shampoo on the head and massage the head slowly and gently build up the lather. Keeping his/her head tilted with support, pour water over the head to avoid getting soap into the eyes. Also, ensure all the shampoo is washed away before wrapping up the bath.

There are reasons why many don’t like the ‘baby hair washing’ time. Your baby will generally start crying against a hair wash if he/she has had shampoo in his/her eyes or mouth or is scared of water in general. However, it can be a pain if they find it difficult to sit in the bath as well.

If you are facing such moments, you can try and distract the baby with some foam and you can put some on yourself as well making it interesting and interactive. You can also try and add some toys and dolls into the bath provided they are not something the baby would choke on and show that even the toys are taking bath as well.

Here’s How you can Bathe your Baby Hair:

  1. Gently place your baby on a towel and remove the clothes one piece at time especially if it is cold.

In case you’re using a tub, ensure the soap and shampoo are kept ready and close by.

  2. Ensure you support the baby with your elbow and you’re holding the baby’s head above the water and ensuring the body is in contact with the water.
  3. Gently wet the baby’s hair using a small bowl or a mug.
  4. Add a few drops of shampoo to the baby’s head and gently massage the shampoo.
  5. To wash the shampoo off, gently tilt the baby’s head backward and start rinsing the hair using little quantities.
  6. To dry your baby’s hair, pat dry the hair with a soft towel and use a soft-bristled brush to brush the baby’s hair.
  7. Mothers who don’t have a bath tub for babies, have used clean sinks. Traditionally, in India, women place the babies on their legs and with the baby’s head towards the knee.
