Fred Perry Teams With Gorillaz for New Campaign

An icon of British fashion, the Fred Perry polo is a staple of most UK men’s wardrobe. The familiar laurel wreath motif has remained the same for over 60 years, with each polo crafted in the heart of Leicestershire. To celebrate the 2001 collection, Fred Perry has teamed with virtual band Gorillaz for a worldwide marketing blitz.

All four members of the band feature in the campaign; frontman and keyboardist 2D sports the original M3 Fred Perry shirt in white, bassist Murdoc Niccals wears the original M12 Twin Tipped in Tartan Green/Ice/Red, guitarist Noodie wears the original M12 Fred Perry shirt in Brighton/Ice/French Navy, and drummer Russell Hobbs the original M12 Fred Perry shirt in Maroon/White/Ice.

Speaking about the brand, Hobbs had this to say:

My first Fred Perry polo shirt wasn’t actually mine, it belonged to Arthur Ashe. Like a cross between Barack Obama and Denzel Washington…. he was an artist, he had style, he had afro hair and he wore tiny shorts – and of course the classic Fred Perry tennis shirt – he even made a record called “How to Play Tennis.” I have that record and I still don’t know how to play tennis. I love the shirt, that’s why it’s my favorite. Forty -Love to y’all…”

Gorrilaz, the brainchild of Blur frontman Damon Albarn and artists Jamie Hewlett, will be heavily involved in the campaign, with each member taking part in interviews and creating playlists that can be found on the Fred Perry website. It’s also rumored there will be a Fred Perry x Gorillaz capsule collection released later this year.
