Dave Grohl Investigates Life On The Road With 'What Drives Us' Documentary
Dave Grohl is a busy man. Having recently released a new album with his band Foo Fighters and readying the release of his first memoir, The Storyteller, Grohl is also set to drop a documentary about life on the road.
What Drives Us tries to answer the question of why bands submit themselves to the rigors of touring in the back of a van. What is it that makes a group of people drive for hours on end, crammed into a stinky van packed with equipment to play shows in front of a dozen punters in small towns nobody has ever heard of?
“This film is my love letter to every musician that has ever jumped in an old van with their friends and left it all behind for the simple reward of playing music,” Grohl explained in a press statement. “What started as a project to pull back the curtain on the DIY logistics of stuffing all of your friends and equipment into a small space for months on end eventually turned into an exploration of ‘why? What drives us?’”
The documentary focuses on two young bands trying to make it big, Starcrawler and RadKey, while also including interviews with a host of famous musicians who share their thoughts on touring. Grohl has called on his big-name friends, with the likes of Ringo Starr, Ben Harper, St. Vincent, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich, Slayer’s Dave Lombardo, U2’s The Edge, L7’s Jennifer Finch, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson, Fugazi/Minor Threat’s Ian MacKaye, and Guns N’ Roses’ Slash and Duff McKagan all contributing.
The film will be available at the end of the month as part of the Coda Collection, a $4.99 per-month subscription channel on Amazon Prime. The channel is aimed at music fans and contains a host of documentaries and live concerts from some of the biggest acts in the world.
What Drives Us will premiere as part of the Coda Collection on April 30. Hit the link below for a free seven-day trial.
