This story leaves open the question of whether Francis Wayland Thurston is ultimately fated to become the lone surviving interpreter of the Cthulhu mythos. Thurston’s efforts to uncover the truth behind the Cthulhu rumors are also aided by good fortune, as when he finds Angell’s secret manuscripts or stumbles across an issue of the Sydney Bulletin while visiting a local museum. In the work, Lovecraft weaves the concept of fate into the musings of cultist elder Old Castro, who surmises that the “Old Ones” will rise when the stars come into alignment with human affairs. Towards the end of the story, Thurston himself wonders whether fate will condemn him to the same, chaotic end that killed his grandfather and his great-uncle.
