The coffin is a funeral box used to keep the corpse for burial or cremating. It can also keep corpses for viewing by placing a glass door on them on display like in the Church of Saint Nicolai in Vejle, Denmark, or the glass-coffin of Vladimir Lenin and Mao Zedong, which are in Red Square, Moscow and Tiananmen Square, Beijing, respectively. It is made with six sides where the top and bottom lids are placed. It is tapered around the shoulder, or rectangular with four sides.

The word ‘coffin’ is derived from the old French coffin from the Latin cophinus, which means basket, which is the Latinisation of the Greek (kophinos), basket. A coffin is buried directly in the ground while placing it in a burial vault or cremated. Alternatively, it can also be entombed above the ground in a mausoleum, a chapel, or a church. The cloth which is used to cover the coffin is called a pall, while those who carry the coffin are called pallbearers.
