The SSC Tuatara Is Officially the World's Fastest Production Car

After a number of testing and mechanical issues, the SSC Tuatara has finally been declared the world’s fastest production car. It was the third attempt by the company to break the record they previously held.

Testing took place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida last week. The hypercar traveled northbound and southbound on the track to record two blistering speeds. The northbound run clocked in at 279.7 mph, while the southbound lap hit an impressive 286.1 mph.

To achieve the fastest speed, both lap times were added together and averaged out. The Tuatara recorded an average speed of 282.9 mph, making it the fastest car on the planet. It beat the Koenigsegg Agera RS’s previous time of 277.9 mph.

The accomplishment comes after SSC tried to break the record late last year. In October they recorded the highest speed but their results came under scrutiny from Racelogic, the official testers. The second attempt in December was marred by mechanical problems. Things finally aligned with the third test last week, with SSC claiming the “World’s fastest car” title.
