‘Woodstock ’99: Peace, Love, and Rage’ Documentary Coming to HBO

If the documentaries about the scandalous, and more recent, Fyre Festival weren’t enough for you, HBO is bringing in the big guns with Woodstock ‘99: Peace, Love, and Rage. “This is not your parent’s Woodstock,” says one of the billboards in the trailer, and boy is that an understatement.

Woodstock ‘99, a documentary produced under the Bill Simmons Music Box label, exposes the deep, dark, and twisted undertones of the 1999 Woodstock revival. This was the second large-scale music festival that tried to emulate the original Woodstock from 1969, but somewhere along the way it lost all the “peace” and “love,” divulging completely into “rage.” You can watch the trailer and read the official synopsis for the documentary below:

How did an iconic celebration of harmony descend into mayhem? Woodstock 99, the first film in Bill Simmons’ Music Box HBO series, examines how the festival collapsed under the weight of its own misguided ambition. The HBO original documentary premieres July 23 on HBOMax.

While the festival looked to be off to a good start with over 400,000 people attending to see the likes of Rage Against The Machine, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Metallica, Megadeth, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, it soon took a dark turn as what should have been a peaceful, exciting music festival became an uncontrollable war zone that included various sexual assaults, alleged rapes, looting, vandalism, out-of-control fires, and more, making the 1999 Woodstock infamous and unparalleled amongst music festivals.

Woodstock ‘99: Peace, Love, and Rage is set to premiere on July 23rd on HBOMax.
