Born together with the first Grand Seiko in 1960, the mark of the lion reflects the ambition to construct a watch that was as precise, durable and beautiful as could be. It was the lion that came to symbolize “the inner strength of Grand Seiko and inspire its watchmakers”, revealing the intensity of their determination.

To celebrate 60 years of timepiece creation, the design of the Spring Drive Chronograph GMT takes inspiration from traditional Japanese samurai warlords, and the armour worn during the Sengoku period. Marked by civil war and social upheaval, for nearly two centuries the unwavering spirit of the Samurai remained. Now in Grand Seiko’s continuous pursuit for the ultimate timepiece, on it’s 60th anniversary they pay tribute to these legendary warriors.

Leading with the distinctive blue color known as Katsu-iro, this indigo dye represented the bravery of the Samurai. Featuring on the armour of these warriors, Katsu-iro is applied similarly to the Spring Drive Chronograph GMT. Coating the dial and watch case, the brave tone reminds wearers of the brave lion within; expressing the martial warrior’s noble spirit. Introducing the king of the Nile and the salt waters of Australia, the grooves of the Katsu-iro colored crocodile strap are finished with rose gold, reflecting “the strength and dignity of the armor” used in battle many centuries ago.

Angled inwards to ensure a comfortably soft fit, the watch case is designed to reproduce “the strength of the lion’s forelegs” grasping your wrist with purpose and grace. Unlikely to release its prey without your command, this timepiece provides “overwhelming wearability.” Complete with Zaratsu polishing and hairline finish, the lion presents with no distortion or imperfections. Embracing the wild chaos of a lion’s mane, the dial pattern delivers proof that this watch is truly king.
