Go Big Wave Surfing Anywhere With the Gigawave

Big wave surfing comes to you with the creatively titled “Gigawave.” No, this isn’t a wave pool but a high-powered, all-electric watercraft promising to generate the largest waves ever produced by a boat for surfing or wakeboarding.

Created by New York-based boat designer Matthew Blew, the Gigawave 350 GW-X is designed to spit out perfect barrels similar to those seen at surfing hotspot Maui. “We’re looking to bridge the gap between surfing and wake surfing and elevate the whole surfing experience,” Blew told Robb Report.

So how does the Gigawave work? The impressive boat will be feature dual 300-hp electric motors powered by a bank of lithium-ion batteries. The water churned out by the zero-emission engines, combined with the specifically designed “Wave Manipulation System” hull, will deliver one massive, continuous barrel perfect for surfing or wakeboarding.

Talking with Robb Report, Blew explained how they have been tinkering with the battery capacity, hoping to achieve a “run-time of six to eight hours between charges, and a quick two-hour charge time with industrial chargers.”

The Gigawave is still in the early design phase, with Blew and his team looking for investors. When the Gigawave is finally available for purchase it won’t be cheap, with Blew putting a price tag of $600,000 on his invention.
