The Fast & Furious franchise has got sillier and sillier with each release, with the upcoming ninth film looking like the most ridiculous yet. Previously we’ve seen Dom Torreto (Vin Diesel) and his ragtag crew take on planes, tanks, and submarines as the set pieces in each movie have gotten crazier. This time we get magnets flinging cars into the air along with actual vehicles that fly. The series may have officially jumped the shark. 

Although way over the top, I’m here for it, especially as this latest installment sees the return of fan-favorite Han (Sung Kang). Thought to have been killed by Deckard Shaw (a not-returning Jason Satham) in the Fast & Furious 6 post-credit scene, he’s well and truly alive and kicking and back for more adventures. The addition of John Cena as Don’s half-brother and main villain Jakob gives Diesel another alpha male to punch on with after his much-publicized fallout with The Rock. While the plot never really matters, you can check out the official synopsis below: 

Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena.)

Expect lots of speeches about family, insane stunts, surprise cameos, and plenty of dumb action.

The film is directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious three, four, five, and six) and stars Diesel, Cena, Kang, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Helen Mirren, and Charlize Theron. F9 will also introduce Cardi B, Ozuna, and Michael Rooker into the series.
