A pencil is a writing instrument with a solid pigment encased in a sleeve, barrel, or shaft that prevents breaking the core or marking a user’s hand. It creates marks by physical abrasion, which leaves a trail of solid core material that adheres to the sheet of paper. There are many types of pencils, and the most common pencils used nowadays are graphite pencils, which use a mixture of clay and graphite and a solid wood barrel of hexagonal type. Their darkness varies from black to light grey. The other types are charcoal-based, carbon pencils, colored pencils, grease pencils, and solid pencils.

One is of propelling type, where an internal mechanism is employed to push the lead out of the internal compartment. On the other hand, clutch pencils hold the lead in a place and are extended by allowing some external force, usually through gravity, to push the lead out of the compartment.
