Paul Smith 531 Collection For Mr Porter
British Designer Returns To Cycling Roots
Sir Paul Smith has brought together two of his biggest loves in a new collection for Mr Porter. The British designer is the e-tailer’s latest partner, having worked together to produce an exclusive cycling clothing collaboration as well as a fixed-gear bike. Named after the lightweight tubing used by Tour de France champions, the 531 range features 11-pieces, including a lightweight jacket, cotton-canvas tote, cycling shorts, cap and bike accessories. Cycling influence is most obvious in the fixed-gear bike, created in a matte black colour way in association with Mercian. Priced at £4,995 it uses a Fizik saddle and Continental tires. Smith’s relationship with Mercian stretches back to a crash that ended the then 17-year-old’s cycling career and led him to begin a career as a designer. The centrepiece of the collection is complimented by stainless steel chronograph watches (£295) and mirrored glasses (£225). A three-pack set of reinforced cycling socks starts the price range off at £60. The collaboration, which is available now on MrPorter.com, follows the recent announcement that parent company Net-A-Porter is to launch a sportswear offshoot of its e-commerce platform, dubbed Net-a-Sporter. The Paul Smith 531 collaboration could see Mr Porter also expand into a dedicated sports category.
