Nike x Undercover Gyakusou SS13 Collection

As men’s fashion pays an increasing amount of attention to performance clothing, Nike and Jun Takahashi’s brand Undercover return for spring/summer 2013 with a new collection from their Gyakusou collaboration.

Taking its name from the renowned running club attended by Takahashi, the Gyakusou collection offers a range of running gear that marries Japanese style with Nike’s signature performance fabrics and technologies. The new collection is inspired by the runners of Brazil and is dedicated to producing high-quality running wear for use in the heat of summer.

Nike’s sportswear expertise brings a formidable range of fabric and features that doesn’t leave room for debate over the quality of the collection. The tops feature dri-fit technology to wick sweat away from the body, to keep the wearer cool at all times, and a stretch panel that ensures increased manoeuvrability – keeping the runner comfortable whatever the conditions.

The outerwear and trousers incorporate the same features but are also treated to be waterproof whilst remaining lightweight. A selection of special edition Nike running shoes play the most important role, keeping the foot comfortable and cool throughout the run with super lightweight Flywire fabric enhancing the already proven designs.

Jun Takahashi’s design talents give the collection a striking look. Bold blues, pinks and oranges pop against neutrals, inspired by the vibrant palette of Rio whilst the design draws on military influences and clean lines for an almost futuristic look that complements the technology on display.

However, there has always been a debate present alongside the integration of function and fashion. Some purists dismiss these collections as an overpriced con for posers wanting to ‘play’ at being professionals whilst some see them as treading exciting new ground for their sport. While the amount of consideration dedicated runners will pay to the fashion side of this collection is dubious, it is still an impressive feat of creativity mixed with the practicality.
