Netflix To Launch 'Untold' Docuseries With Malice at the Palace
Beginning early August streaming service Netflix will launch the Untold Vol 1., a group of five documentary stories about sports tales very different from the norm.
Untold will kick off on August 10 with the “Malice at the Palace,” a breakdown of the infamous 2004 melee between players from the Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, and fans.
Considered one of the darkest days in professional basketball, the Malice at the Palace featured NBA players fighting with fans and each other on the court and in the stands, which led to monumental suspensions, including 86 games for Ron Artest.
The melee was sparked when a drunken Detroit fan poured a drink onto Artest as he left the court.
“Each film kicks off at a pivotal moment – the big fight, the Olympics, the playoffs – and then delves deep into what happened beyond the headlines, as told by those who lived it, to reveal the grit, resilience, heartbreak, triumph, violence, comedy, and pathos beneath the sweat,” reads the official Netflix synopsis.
The other films in the first collection document the story of Caitlin Jenner, tennis player Mardy Fish, trailblazing female boxer Christy Martin, and a minor league hockey team backed by the mob.
“Sports is a great unifier in our country,” said directors and co-executive producers Chapman Way and Maclain Way.
“It crosses politics. It permeates culture. We’ve tried to separate it as its own industry, but just like art and film, it’s so pervasive it generates a wide discussion amongst people.”
The Way’s produced and directed Wild Wild Country, the excellent limited series documentary about the Rajneeshpuram cult which is also available on Netflix.
Untold Vol. 1 will air on Netflix this August 10.
