Men’s Rag & Bone Clothing: SS13

Rag & Bone Spring/Summer 2013

Rag & Bone’s spring/summer 2013 collection has been inspired by three strong themes: the military, the desert and motocross. An interesting question that sculpted the design process was how army officers remained smart during spells of intense heat in the desert. Photographs from the military archives acted as useful reference points, with the brand then considering how a similar aesthetic could be adapted within a contemporary context. Vintage shots of the American author and journalist, Ernest Hemmingway, became a muse to draw inspiration from – a public image who embraced adventure and who also documented his time in the military. In an attempt to emphasise the adventure theme within this season’s collection, Rag & Bone turned to the physically demanding sport of motocross, which derived from the motorcycle trial competitions held in the UK. The deep blue leather jacket with red padded shoulder inserts is a direct result of this influence, whilst the spiced coral jersey with contrasting blue sleeves and graphic numbered font printed on the front also indicates a strong reference to the sport. The prominent palette of faded reds and oranges is inspired by the vision of the blazing sun hitting the desert sand, whilst khaki green emulates the iconic military colour. A specific focus on the function of clothing is vital to the collection’s purpose, with durable, lightweight and compact fabrications allowing traditionally cold weather pieces such as parkas and blazers to be worn in comfort during the summer. The use of laser cutting also provides breathability to cotton shirts. Overall, the contrasting influences helps to create a creative, interesting collection that clashes safe, functional detailing with a dangerous, courageous edge.
