Overalls were first mass produced in the 1890s by Levi Strauss and Jacob W. Davis at Levi Strauss & Co., however they originally were suspenders attached to jeans and used as protective clothing in jobs like construction work.

They were a working man’s clothing item, worn by the poorest people in the American population in the 1930s during The Great Depression. Jobs like mining, logging, and farming required durable clothes, thus gaining popularity among people in these professions.

However, these days, overalls have been modernized and became popular due to the utilitarian, more durable clothing items seen in urban street fashion today.
