Heritage Homecoming On Savile Row

‘The Menswear Capital of the World’ is a badge which London currently wears with pride, having welcomed the likes of Burberry and Jimmy Choo back for London Collections: MEN this year. And as 2013 draws to a close, we in British fashion can celebrate yet another homecoming – this time for luxury label Kent & Curwen. Founded in 1926 by Eric Kent and Dorothy Curwen on Savile Row, the company originally supplied repp ties to the top regiments, clubs and private schools in UK. They were also responsible for creating the original cricket jumper, which took them across the pond to Tinseltown as they became outfitters to the Hollywood Cricket Club during the 1930s. Currently under American ownership, the thoroughly British brand will be returning home to No. 2 Savile Row in a new 1,600 square foot retail space, designed by the late David Collins and his studio. The store celebrates the heritage of the label, which was born into the world of sport, evolving far from an initial collection of ties and cricket sweaters. Taking The Three Lions Herald of King Richard I as their trademark, Kent & Curwe helped define British 20th century style with their regal apparel. Reflected in their clientele, they have dressed Prince Charles, Cary Grant and Errol Flynn, among others. Although seeped in British history, company President Craig Reynolds is keen to point out the “re-energising” of the brand, encompassing a new look and direction that will fit in perfectly on Savile Row. “Our goal was to respect the authenticity of the brand, while modernising it for today’s man” he says. “Moving it from the ‘sport of life’ to the ‘life of sport’”. See more at kentandcurwen.co.uk or visit the brand at: No. 2 Savile Row, London, W1S 3PA.
