Kanye West Drops $57.3 Million on Tadao Ando-Designed Malibu Rereat

A noted lover of Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando, rapper, producer, and clothing designer Kanye West can now finally live in his own Ando creation. Riding high from the success of his latest album DONDA, The Dirt reports West has dropped a cool $57.3 million on a beachfront property from the Japanese designer.

One of only a few Ando-designed American homes, this three-level mansion is a minimalist’s dream. Resembling a modern bunker, it’s reported the near 4,000 square foot house contains 1,200 tons of concrete, 200 tons of steel reinforcement, and 12 pylons plunging 60 feet into the earth to keep the mammoth structure from sinking into the sand.

Each level of the Brutalist-inspired home serves a specific purpose. The lowest floor is for sleeping, with three ensuite bedrooms. The middle level is for gathering with friends and includes a living room, kitchen, and bathroom. The third level is for the owner and features a penthouse-styled bedroom with a rooftop terrace.

While there are no photos of the interior, Marmol Radziner, the LA-based firm who collaborated with Ando on the house, has described it as minimalist “yet warm.” There’s no garden or yard either, making the upkeep very easy and low cost.

Despite the high price tag, West seems to have gotten a bargain, with the property previously on the market for $75 million. The former owner, Richard Sachs, first purchased the Malibu property for just $1.9 million in 2003 but is believed to have spent several more millions turning it into a concrete retreat.

The home is just another in a long line of opulent real estate investments West has been involved in over the past few years. His Hidden Hills mansion is only 30 minutes up the road, while he also owns a ranch in Wyoming, a condo in Calabasas, and a couple of condos in New York City.
