Hublot Drops the Great Eight With a Big Bang
In honor of one of the great Russian ice hockey players ever to carve up the ice, Hublot presents the limited edition Hublot Big Bang Unico Red Carbon Alex Ovechkin. Paying tribute to “The Great Eight,” as he is affectionately known because of his jersey number, this exceptional timepiece sports a lightweight carbon fiber case fused with bright red inserts made of a high-tech, high-performance material. Screaming both mother Russia and the colors he wore as captain of the Washington Capitols, the Hublot Big Bang Unico Red Carbon Alex Ovechkin aims to capture his extraordinary resilience and longevity in all its glory.
Scoring his 700th goal on February 22, 2020, in a game against the New Jersey Devils, NHL commentators calculated it could be decades before another player reaches the 700 goals mark. A landmark achieved by only seven other players in the league, it’s a testament to the success of the Russian ice hockey superstar.
Describing the opportunity to work with his favorite watch brand as a “huge honor,” Alexander Ovechkin said he already knew “one hundred percent” which watch he wanted to work on from the moment he was asked.
“To work with my favorite watch brand and design a watch, as well as have it named after me, is a huge honor. When Hublot asked which model we should work on together, it one hundred percent had to be the Big Bang Unico. I love this watch. Using a “Non-Woven Fabric” (NWF) to strengthen the composite material from which the case is made, Hublot has injected red accents consisting of micro-glass fibers, which are then fused with a resin-tinted adhesive. Powered by Hublot’s in-house UNICO chronograph mechanism and its column wheel on the dial side, “it’s the perfect expression of Hublot’s bold watchmaking philosophy and of our partnership,” said Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe.
