Eddie Murphy Returns in New Trailer for 'Coming 2 America'

It’s the sequel you never knew you needed. 33 years after the original was released, Eddie Murphy’s King Akeem of Zamunda returns in Coming 2 America.

The highly anticipated follow-up to the 1988 smash hit, Coming To America, finds Murphy heading back to America to find his illegitimate son. It’s a fish out of water story as Murphy discovers his long lost son and brings him back to Zamunda to train him to be his heir.

This doesn’t go down well with his oldest daughter who believes she should be the next in line to the throne, even though women are not allowed to rule. Murphy also has to deal with Wesley Snipes’ Zamundan general who wants the crown for himself.

The official synopsis from Amazon Prime doesn’t give much away, but director Craig Brewer did shed some more light on things in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly

“Without me giving away too much, there’s trouble on the horizon with a neighboring country because of something Akeem did or did not do in the first movie. And he finds out that he has a son in America that he did not know he had.

Prince Akeem now needs to be a king and have children of his own and find out how to rule his kingdom with these old laws. He’s got some problems he’s got to figure out and he’s got a little bit more depth in this particular one.”

Coming 2 America reunites Murphy with many of the original cast, including Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, John Amos, and Louie Anderson. It also features a raft of new faces from the acting world, including the aforementioned Snipes along with Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Jermaine Fowler, Bella Murphy, Rotimi, KiKi Layne, Nomzamo Mbatha, and Teyana Taylor

The movie will be accompanied by a hip-hop themed soundtrack dropping the same day as the film. Produced by Def Jam, the first song from the compilation is Megan Thee Stallion’s “I’m A King.”
