The Furtive Pygmy is finally forgotten as the Age of Fire begins. A dark curse affects humanity with the Darksign – a symbol on their bodies that are believed to be connected to an undead curse. The main story takes place towards the end of the second Age of Fire. Infected humans exhibit the undead curse, which causes them to periodically resurrect after death. Eventually, they lose their minds, a phenomenon they call “hollowing.”

In this game, the player character is a cursed undead trapped in a cursed asylum. As soon as the player escapes the asylum, he travels to Lordran to ring the Bells of Awakening. Kingseeker Frampt awakened by the bells and told the player to ascend to Anor Londo, the dwelling of the Gods. When the player plays Anor Londo, Gwynevere tells them they must succeed Lord Gwyn and fulfill the prophecy. Aspirants will need to acquire the Lord Soul of Izalith’s Witch, Nito, the Four Kings, and Search the Scaleless to achieve this. The player may be met by Darkstalker Kaathe, who encourages but does not force them to join the fire, giving way to the age of darkness instead. Following the acquisition of the Lord Soul, the player lands in the Kiln of the First Flame to face Gwyn. If Gwyn is defeated, players are given the option of linking the flame to perpetuate the Age of Fire or letting it die to trigger the Age of Dark.
