Care to take a ride in a bit of history? Well, now’s your chance to own Carroll Shelby’s 1965 427 Cobra Roadster, if you have a spare $14 million, that is.

Owned by one of the all-time most influential figures in American automotive history, Carroll Shelby recently rose again to prominence following the release of the 2019 racing film Ford v Ferrari. Portrayed by Academy Award winner Matt Damon, the film would be released seven years after his passing in 2012.

Though he would not live to see a portion of his illustrious story projected onto the big screen, millions of people worldwide got a first glimpse of the iconic Shelby Cobra.

While it’s not the Ford GT he helped create, it’s the iconic Shelby Cobra that has most people talking when it comes to the man himself. One of the all-time coveted vehicles, auction house Mecum is about to drop the hammer on Shelby’s personal 1965 427 Cobra Roadster.

Dubbed the crown jewel of Carroll Shelby’s personal collection, the CSX3178 model was first assembled in March 1966, staying with Carroll right up until his passing in May 2012. With only five 427 Cobra’s finished in the gorgeous Charcoal Gray colorway, Carroll’s was made with a 427 engine with dual quads and a 4-speed Toploader transmission.

As with all things made from metal, father time is not always so kind, leading to Carroll and the renowned Cobra specialist Mike McCluskey to restore the CSX3178 in 1972, repainting it Guardsman Blue with a gold nose.

Of course, being a successful race car driver in his own time, Carroll Shelby decided to upgrade the engine to an aluminum-head 427 side-oiler engine with an automatic transmission. Then in 2002, it was painted red by the home crew at Shelby American in Las Vegas, because as we all know, red cars go faster.

After his passing, a consigner purchased the car before undergoing a complete Concours restoration by renowned Cobra restorers Legendary Motorcar Company, returning the CSX3178 to its 427 configuration and original Charcoal paint colorway.
