At around 14 years old he commenced using homemade tattoo machines to tattoo band members. Exploring for designs led him to the library where he discovered lithographs of the original Tongan Tatau which entirely changed his life, which is the subject of a documentary he is operating on. In his early 20s, He met Tahitian tattooist Fredrick “Pooino” Yorandi and anthropologist Tricia Allen who were both Polynesian tattooists. With the help and direction of Tricia Allen, he attended his first tattoo conference in Toronto Canada in 1997 and never looked behind.

He started tattooing as a hobby which became a full-time career and then morphed into a quest to help people reconnect to their cultural heritage using artistic representation. One of the most encouraging things about tattooing was traveling and meeting people from so many distinct cultures and walks of life. These people urge him daily so that he can keep thrusting forward with his art.

Joel Albanez has been tattooing since 1999. With the artistic vision of Joel Albanez and the expertise and guidance of Suluape Aisea Toetu’u, collectively the three of them lighted Soul Signature, in late 2004.
